Susanne Resmark - Singer - Mezzo-Soprano

Susanne Resmark constantly fascinates audiences around the world with her vibrant portrayals in a diverse range of roles. In every aspect a storytelling artist; she is admired for her exciting declamation combining crystal-clear diction with beauty of sound. Her almost limitless vocal impact and instinctive richness has made her widely considered as the leading singing actress from Scandinavia.

Since autumn 2001 Susanne Resmark has been engaged as soloist at The Royal Danish Opera in Copenhagen where she among other roles has sungAzucena in Il Trovatore, Eboli in Don Carlo, Ulrica in Un Ballo in Maschera, Ortrud in Lohengrin, Fricka, bothin Rheingold and Walküre, Klytämnestra in Elektra, Erda in Siegfried and Magdelone in Maskerade. Other important roles in Susannes repertoire are Amneris in Aida, Venus in Tannhaüser, Herodias in Salome and Amme in Die Frau Ohne Schatten.

In February 2002 Susanne Resmark made a spectacular appearance as Fricka in a concert performance of Die Walküre with the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Kent Nagano, and her debut as Ortrud in Lohengrin, in June the same year, established her as one of the leading Wagner singers in Europe. In autumn 2004 Susanne Resmark made her successful US-debut at San Francisco Opera as Mescalina in Ligeti’s Le Grand Macabre with Michael Boder conducting.

Recent seasons have included engagements in Gothenburg, Stockholm, Amsterdam, Moscow, Bilbao, Sao Paolo and Brussels, as well as at the festivals of Schleswig-Holstein and Salzburg. She has worked with conductors such as Herbert Blomstedt, Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos, Semyon Bychkov, Aldo Ceccato, Valery Gergiev, James Loughran, Kent Nagano and Mikhail Yurovsky. Works performed were among others Mahler’s 2nd and 3rd symphonies, Kindertotenlieder and Das Lied von der Erde, Verdi’s Requiem and Wagner’s Wesendonck Lieder.

Susanne Resmark has made several CD-recordings, among others: Strauss’ Elektra, Nielsen’s Maskerade, Brahm’s Two songs for alto Op. 91, Von Klenau’s Gespräche mit dem Tod, Ruder’s The handmaids tale, Verdi’s Un ballo in maschera and for release on DVD Langgard’s Antikrist and Wagner’s Der Ring des Nibelungen. Susanne Resmark has also been presented with three highly coveted rewards; The Birgit Nilsson Award (1988 and 2002), The Elisabeth Don reward (2002) and one of Denmark’s most prestigious rewards to singers, The Reumert prize for Best Singer (2007) for her performances as Ortrud in Peter Konwitschny’s Lohengrin.

Among recent and upcoming engagements to be mentioned are Mahler 8 in Dresden and Bukarest, Amneris in Aida at the Malmö Opera, Ortrud in Lohengrin at Deutsche Oper Berlin, Jezibaba in Rusalka and Eboli in Don Carlo at The Royal Opera in Copenhagen, Gertrude in Roméo et Juliette for Salzburger Festspiele and La Scala, Marfa/Kabanicha in Katia Kabanova at The Gothenburg Opera, Klytämnestra in Elektra for Den Norske Opera in Oslo, Ulrica in Un Ballo in Maschera at the Hamburg Opera, Venus in Tannhäuser in Copenhagen, Mère Marie in Les Dialogues des Carmélites at Bayerische Staatsoper München as well as Théâtre du Capitole in Toulouse, Ortrud in Tokyo, Jezibaba in Rusalka at the Gothenburg Opera and Ragonde in Le Comte Ory at the Metropolitan Opera.
