François de Carpentries - Stage director
The French director François De Carpentries studied piano, oboe, literature and theater in Brussels. In addition to his directing career, he is also a playwright and songwriter.
De Carpentries has been stage director and light designer for the operas in Brussels, Oslo, Toronto, Lyon, Strasbourg, Nancy, Nice, Tours, Limoges, Rouen, Rennes, Metz, Reims, Krefeld, Würzburg, Mönchengladbach, Nürnberg, Wuppertal, Koblenz, Coburg, Hof and Innsbruck: 70 new productions till now and 47 revivals.
Initially specializing in the “buffa” genre with La Cenerentola, Barbiere di Siviglia, Pietra del Paragone, Torvaldo e Dorliska, Don Pasquale, Viva la Mamma, Lo Frate ‘nnammorato, La Stellidaura Vendicante, Prodanà Nevêsta, Orphée aux Enfers, La Grande Duchesse de Gérolstein, Die Fledermaus, Nacht in Venedig, Lustige Witwe and the “dramma giocoso” of Mozart: Così Fan Tutte, Die Zauberflöte, Die Entführung aus dem Serail, Don Giovanni, Nozze di Figaro, he later went into more tragic repertoire: La Bohème et Madama Butterfly, Lucia di Lammermoor (twice Theateroscar 2007 and 2008 for best staging), Lakmé, Carmen, Idomeneo, Pikovaja Dama (Theateroscar 2009), Don Carlo (Theateroscar 2010), Rigoletto, Il Trovatore and Aïda, Roméo et Juliette, Manon.
In 2013 he wrote and staged the multimedia show La Boîte de Jazz (293 performances in Belgium), and an opera play Opera Making Of, in 2015, the world premiere of the first opera about Tintin: The Castafiore Emerald, 3 opéra-comiques Les Filles d’Olympe, Fêtes et Cendres, La vie d’artiste en 507h, and the musical tango Mayra la jeune fille du bout du monde.
More recently Alessandro Nell’Indie in Würzburg, Das Land des Lächelns in Hof, Lakmé in Coburg, a new multimedia show on film history La Boîte à Images (186 performances in Belgium), Cavalleria Rusticana / Gianni Schicchi in Krefeld, Don Giovanni in Linz, Le Nozze di Figaro in Reims, Manon Lescaut in Görlitz, Olympe de Gouges in Bourges, Octavia in Innsbruck, Rigoletto in Tours, Tannhäuser in Görlitz, Cosi Fan Tutte in Linz, the creation of Fêtes & Cendres in Bourges, La Clemenza di Tito in Linz, Les Paladins in Oldenburg, Madama Butterfly in Hof, Hoffmann Tales in Klosterneuburg, the creation of 507h in Bourges, Tosca in Görlitz, Le Nozze di Figaro in Linz, Welttheater Mozart in Mönchengladbach.
